Taylor to Move On From Thor to Terminator?

Thor-2_-alan-taylor

The scuttlebutt has been good for the upcoming sequel Thor: The Dark World, which suggests that director Alan Taylor was able to capitalize on the promise of the first film and potentially deliver something great. But can he do it again? Paramount Pictures and Annapurna Pictures are hoping so as Variety is reporting that Taylor has signed up to direct the next installment of the Terminator series, another franchise with potential, but one that needs even more help than Thor.

To recap the situation, Paramount and Annapurna are the latest companies to acquire the Terminator rights and try to launch a compelling film series that might capitalize on the two, original James Cameron-filmed Terminator movies. For a while it seemed that Fast & Furious filmmaker Justin Lin would get the job done, but out of a list that reportedly included Ang Lee, Rian Johnson and Denis Villeneuve, it seems that Taylor has emerged victorious.

But what sort of Terminator will Taylor make? There was a script by Laeta Kalorgridis (Shutter Island) and Patrick Lussier (Drive Angry) that, according to rumor, was about a terminator (to be played by Dwayne Johnson) who is sent back in time to the 1950s to kill Sarah Connor’s parents, and the Good Samaritan (to be by played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) who comes to their aid. It’s unknown how true that rumor is, but Taylor could either proceed with that story (if it is true), or throw out any current script development and start again from scratch.

Along with Thor: The Dark World, Taylor has directed the films Palookaville, The Emperor’s New Clothes and Kill the Poor, along with several episodes of Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, Mad Men and Homicide: Life on the Street.

What do you Bastards think? Excited to see what Taylor can do with Terminator? Are you even excited about another Terminator movie at all? Sound off below.

Jose Padilha’s ‘Robocop’ Reboot Trailer Hits the Internet

hi res robocop reboot 656

The first trailer for director Jose Padilha‘s reboot of the much beloved Robocop franchise has finally hit the Internet, now we just need to see how hard the Internet hits back. I’m truly conflicted when it comes to rebooting the Robocop franchise, the first movie has always been a favorite of mine. Will it stay true to the roots of the character or just change everything? If it does change significant aspects, will it still be good or just another mess like Total Recall?

The cast looks great on paper, in fact it blows away a point by point comparison with the original cast. The only questionable casting is the lead Joel Kinnaman. I just don’t know his work well enough to have confidence in his carrying this movie. The rest of this cast is a slam dunk, Abbie Cornish, Jay Baruchel, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton and Gary Oldman is a grouping that inspires confidence and trust. How Padilha puts it all together could be the tipping factor.

Take a look at the trailer and then let’s talk about what we’ve just seen.

Hmm, I find myself liking the look of the sets and effects shown so far. Oldman’s line about “the illusion of freewill” is an interesting take that I look forward to seeing more about. It looks like in this version the wife is the one that makes the decision to allow the OmniCorp to put Murphy into the Robocop program. Will Murphy know about his family at that point or have to discover it like the original.

Seeing Jackie Earle Haley toward the end was great. His role as Maddox should be fantastic, I’ve always loved his work.

Well, what did you think? Are you more open to this reboot or did this trailer just set your disillusions in concrete? Will this movie do better than Dredd?

Robocop hits the big screen on February 7th.

Del Toro’s ‘Crimson Peak’ Picks Up a New Lead

tom hiddleston

Next on director Guillermo del Toro’s list of things to do is the upcoming movie, Crimson Peak. This haunted house-based flick originally saw Benedict Cumberbatch as the lead, but he has since dropped out. Now, it looks like del Toro has picked up a replacement. And the winner is… Tom Hiddleston,

Hiddleston’s career has been kicking ass and taking names ever since his fan-praised performance as Loki. And no doubt there are plenty of people that wouldn’t mind seeing the actor front-and-center once more, particularly with del Toro on the other side of the camera.

In case you don’t know anything about what to expect from Crimson Peak, here’s what del Toro had to say about it:

Crimson Peak is a much, much, much smaller movie, completely character-driven. It’s an adult movie, an R-rated movie, pretty adult. Shockingly different from anything I’ve done in the English language. Normally, when I go to do a movie in America for the spectacle and younger audience, for Blade or whatever. This movie’s tone is scary and it’s the first time I get to do a movie more akin to what I do in the Spanish movies… The thing I do in those movies is recontextualization, take a movie and then move it into a completely different place. Like a Gothic and then move it into the Spanish Civil War [The Devil's Backbone]. This is a Gothic romance, haunted house, in the north of England.

Well, I for one am happy to see del Toro getting back to his roots, away from the big FX and big budget films he’s been doing lately. This will be a chance to see a movie similar to the ones that made me love his work so much.

What do the Nerd Readers think? Hiddleston = good for horror flick? Excited to see del Toro going back to character-centric movies?

Thanks to /film for the heads-up.

New ‘Terminator’ Rumor: Two More from Original Movie Signing Up?

terminator-1984-linda-hamilton-michael-biehn

At Nerd Bastards we’re no strangers to weird movie rumors, we deal with them on a daily basis, but this latest tidbit concerning Terminator 5 really boggles the mind.

Comic Book Movie is reporting that, in addition to Arnold Schwarzenegger, original Terminator co-stars Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn are also being courted by the film’s producers. No word on exactly what their status is: Are they negotiating? Has the offer been merely extended? Is this for a full-on supporting role, or are they only going to cameo? Who knows.

As I’m sure you know Hamilton and Biehn had pretty pivotal roles in The Terminator. She played Sarah Connor, mother of humanity’s future savior John Connor, and he played Kyle Reese, a soldier from the future sent back in time to protect Sarah, and, inadvertently (by design) father her child. It would seem unlikely that Hamilton and Biehn would be appearing as Sarah and Kyle though, so could something else be afoot?

Naturally. Remember that rumor about Terminator 5 taking place in the 1950s and is about a grizzled old man (Schwarzenegger) who protects Sarah Connor’s parents from an all new, more deadly Terminator played by Dwayne Johnson? Hamilton and Biehn be recast in this provocative new setting too, although they may still be too old to play Sarah Conner’s parents. Of course all this is merely rumor, and everything about the production of Terminator 5, with the exception of its existence, should be taken with a grain of salt.

But what do you say Bastards, want to see a Terminator reunion of Schwarzenegger, Hamilton and Biehn? Sound off below.

Loki Solo Movie? Be Burdened With Glorious Purpose and Sign The Petition to Make it So

loki-wearing-loki

What does it say about humanity when we, the fans, idolize villains more than the heroes? I really can’t imagine the answer, or maybe I just don’t want to. Whether I’m awe inspired at the seething madness and animalistic behavior of Heath Ledger’s Joker, (Dark Knight) or swooning over the charm, guile and burdened purpose of Tom Hiddleston’s Loki (Thor, Avengers) I’m finding it’s so good to be bad. I guess Darth Helmet (Spaceballs) put it best when he eloquently said, “Evil will always triumph because good is dumb.”

Speaking of Tom Hiddleston, the fan loyalty to him and his Loki character is fierce. Humanity has pledged their undying allegiance to him. Given the response his appearance at this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con drew from the Hall, we (apparently) do wish to be ruled by him. Well, at least the hordes of naive fan-girls do. Anyway, you trickster supporters are about to get Loki’d. Provided your faithfulness rings true, that is. What am I talking about? Well, more than 11,000 people have signed a petition demanding that Loki get the solo movie from Marvel Studios he deserves.

Here’s a quote from change.org:

We feel Loki (as portrayed by Tom Hiddleston), due to the astounding following both the character and actor have earned as a result of the Marvel films, more than warrants further exploration of his story,” the petition at Change.org states. “We believe such an endeavor would not only be profitable and successful, but provide a larger view for general audiences of the incredibly complex and diverse personality a well-known villain of the Marvel universe is gifted with. To explore this darker side of the Thor storyline would be to give credit to a compelling individual, his remarkable portrayer and an appreciative audience that feels a fierce loyalty to both in an unprecedented way. Simply put: He has an army.

Nobody can deny that Loki’s portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes across as a mischievous and understandable villain, but his own movie? I don’t think so. Too many other marvel characters that need a solo movie. On the other hand, to see a movie thru the villains eyes? That’d be mildly interesting. That’s never been done before in a comic book movie, it could change everything.

Disney Opens Mystery Box on ‘Tomorrowland’ with Plot Description

tomorrowland

Without Star Wars Episode VII and a Comic Con retread of the Marvel slate, the fan excitement level at D23 was dependent on what was revealed about Brad Bird‘s next film Tomorrowland. Director Bird and writer/lightening rod Damon Lindelof literally had a mystery box at D23 where they give hints of what the film might be about. But if you’re more a fan of the direct approach, Disney put out a press release today featuring a compelling, though brief, plot description.

Bound by a shared destiny, a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor jaded by disillusionment embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory as “Tomorrowland.”

Drew McWeeney from Hitfix got into a bit of hot water because he published a detailed plot description that, as it turns out, was rather accurate. It looks likely that Britt Robertson is playing the “bright, optimistic teen,” and George Clooney is the “former boy genius.”

The press release also included detailed information about the producing team, the cast, and the production crew:

Principal photography has begun on Disney’s mystery adventure “Tomorrowland,” starring two-time Academy Award winner George Clooney (“Michael Clayton,” “Syriana”), Hugh Laurie (“Monsters vs. Aliens,” “Arthur Christmas”), Britt Robertson (“Under The Dome”), Raffey Cassidy (“Dark Shadows,” “Snow White and the Huntsman”) and Thomas Robinson (“The Switch”). The film is directed, produced and co-written by two-time Oscar winner Brad Bird (“Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” “The Incredibles”). Damon Lindelof (“Star Trek Into Darkness,” “Prometheus”) and Jeffrey Chernov (“Star Trek,” “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”) are also producers. The screenplay is written by Brad Bird and Damon Lindelof from a story by Lindelof & Jeff Jensen and Brad Bird.

Jeff Jensen and John Walker (“The Incredibles”) will executive produce with Bernard Bellew (“Les Mis rables,” “28 Weeks Later”) and Tom Peitzman, VFX producer (“Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” “Alice in Wonderland”) serving as co-producers.

Bird has gathered a great team behind the lens with Oscar winning director of photography Claudio Miranda (“Life of Pi,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”), production designer Scott Chambliss (“Star Trek,” “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “Cowboys & Aliens”), Oscar nominated costume designer Jeffrey Kurland (“Inception,” “Ocean’s Eleven”) and Academy Award-winning editor Walter Murch (“The English Patient,” “Cold Mountain”).

Tomorrowland will be in theaters on December 12, 2014. Excited about the project? Disinterested? Sound off in the comments section below.

Alt-Ending Shows Different Fate for Mandarin in ‘Iron Man 3′

Iron Man 3

Of course, films rarely go from script to screen with absolutely no changes to plot, or character, or dialogue, and Iron Man 3 is no exception. In advance of the DVD/Blu-ray release of the film, several alternative takes of the film’s grand finale at the docks have been posted online. The work by storyboard artist Federico D’Alessandro shows some subtle differences between what was planned and what the finished film turned out to be.

Amongst the changes, an all-new, all-different ending for The Mandarin played by Ben Kingsley. Now I know what Shane Black did with The Mandarin in the film was, uh, contentious to say the least. I was fine with it, but the “new ending” for The Mandarin seems kind of silly to me, which is maybe why it was cut. Anyway, there may be spoilers in the video clips below if you haven’t yet seen Iron Man 3, so you’ve been warned appropriately.

Here’s the alternative ending for The Mandarin:

‘Avengers 2’ Rumormill – J.A.R.V.I.S. is Ultron?

Paul-Bettany-JARVIS-Avengers

Ever since the news hit that the second Avengers film would carry the title Age of Ultron, speculation has be rampant as to how exactly Joss Whedon plans on putting it all together. He’s already admitted to a divergence from the original Ultron origin story, so people are naturally wondering how the metal menace is going to make his first appearance and thus become the primary villain. One site, Unleash the Fanboy, thinks they know the answer. By using some leaked animated storyboards from the original Avengers, one in particular of an alternate scene, they theorize that it will be Tony Stark’s A.I. creation, J.A.R.V.I.S. that will be taking on the role of Ultron. Check out the storyboard below:

Combined with the rumors that Tony Stark will be involved in Ultron’s creation, the numbers seem to add up. Furthermore, the folks at Unleash the Fanboy claim an inside source with Disney who had this to say about the possibility of J.A.R.V.I.S. as Ultron:

That’s the plan so far from what I’ve heard. Obvious, isn’t it?

And as far as Paul Bettany’s further involvement in the new Avengers flick is concerned, the “source” had this to say:

He’s returning, but I’m not sure if they’re doing motion capture with him, or if they’ll use someone else. Since he’s only done voiceovers, the contract is new.

You can head over to Unleash the Fanboy to read more about what they had to say regarding their J.A.R.V.I.S. is Ultron theory.

Thanks to Unleash the Fanboy for the rumor.

Matt Damon’s Take on Casting Ben Affleck as Batman and What About Robin the Boy Wonder

tumblr_mrzm09ggUj1qewacoo1_r1_500

Matt Damon was recently in India, promoting his latest movie Elysium when The Times of India caught up with him and asked him those burning questions that has Internet forums a buzz and generating clever pictures like the one above. What did he think about his long time buddy Ben Affleck being cast as the new Batman, and would Damon, could Damon, should Damon, join the cast of Batman Versus Superman as Robin the Boy Wonder.

I think it will be great, It will be terrific. I know there are a lot of people grousing on the internet. I just think it’s kind of funny. You know, he’s not playing King Lear. It’s Batman! Certainly within his skill set. If anybody saw ‘Argo’ or ‘The Town,’ and all the work he’s been doing lately, it’s way more nuanced and interesting and way more difficult than Batman! Batman just sits there with his cowl over his head and whispers in a kinda gruff voice at people. Bruce Wayne is the more challenging part of the role, and Ben will be great at that…

But it’s safe to say I won’t be Robin.

Yeah, I think deep down we all knew that wasn’t going to happen. I bet we’ll see some funny video on the Jimmy Kimmel Show about it though. Maybe Ben Affleck, dressed as Batman pulling up to the house from Goodwill Hunting in the Batmobile with Matt Damon coming to the door in street clothes and they back and forth with Damon saying something about never wearing that costume and it ain’t gonna happen no matter how many times Affleck comes to the door.

The other Matt Damon news making its way around the internet is that Damon might be returning to the Bourne franchise. Damon had this to say:

They were just trying to revitalize that franchise and I didn’t mind at all, It didn’t have anything to do with the movie that I made. It makes sense for a studio to keep those franchises as alive as they can, it makes business sense for them. I don’t begrudge anybody for that. I am a huge fan of Jeremy. I don’t equate my Bourne movie with his. He didn’t play the part of Jason Bourne. It’s a totally different thing.

Could that movie have both Damon and Jeremy Renner in it? That would be great to see. I’ve loved all the Jason Bourne films and have read more than a few of the books.

‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ Production Locations and Dates, and a New Obi-Wan Kenobi Story

star wars ep vii

Today at Nerd Bastards, we bring you yet more Star Wars: Episode VII related rumors. This time around, nothing more about plot or casting but rather a peek at some of the production details. It looks like the powers-that-be have decided on some shooting locations, including a studio they’ll be using, as well as setting a date for when production is to officially begin.

Apparently, they’re looking at using the U.K.’s Pinewood Studios to shoot the flick. Though with Kathleen Kennedy expressing the desire to use a healthy dose of real locations, and not rely on CGI for every bloody thing, there’s no telling where the movie might end up as it runs its course. Other rumors say that there are already planned shoots in New Mexico, Iceland, Jordan, Scotland and Ireland. That’s quite the list and it promises us some fairly dynamic scenery if the rumor proves true.

As far as when they’re starting on this much-awaited movie, it looks like they’re almost ready to go. Rumors (again) put production as commencing on January 21st of next year. That’s just a few months off, so let the demand for set photos and spoiler leaks begin.

And as a side note, if you just can’t hold out for another two years and need a Star Wars fix now, this week sees the release of a new novel, Star Wars: Kenobi. This story will follow the tale of the titular old Jedi as he lands on Tatooine and hangs out, doing Force stuff while waiting for Luke to get old enough to wield his lightsaber like a grown man.

Thanks to /film for the heads-up.
