Guardians of the Galaxy

[UPDATED!] ‘Guardians’ Director James Gunn Received Hate Mail Over Karen Gillan’s Shaved Head… Seriously!?

Karen Gillan whipping off her wig, saying she’d done something, “a bit rash,” and revealing she’s now completely bald for her role as Nebula in Marvel‘s Guardians of the Galaxy will go down as a highlight from this year’s Comic Con. Of all the people to shave their head, why’d it have to Karen!? Those beautiful ginger locks – GONE!

Fans everywhere are upset, but most understand it’s only hair which in time will grow back. (Besides, she’s got, like, the cutest little shaved head!) Others though, well, some fans are so upset they’ve taken to sending hate mail to director James Gunn, claiming he made her to it, and how dare he!?

If you are sending me hate messages about making @KarenGillan2 shave her head, you might consider the overall state of your life.

- James Gunn (@JamesGunn) July 24, 2013

Anyone who’s a fan of Karen knows she’s a bit mad. Matt Smith always said so. I can’t imagine anyone but Karen could make Karen shave her head. And if you’re going to send hate mail to James Gunn I’m sure you can find a more important matter than Karen’s bald head. I mean, really.

UPDATE! Since Gunn’s original tweet on the matter the director has gone on Formspring to elaborate on the need for Gillan to shave her head in the first place.

It was explained that whoever played Nebula would have to shave her head. So Karen knew about this when she auditioned. A bald cap looks fake when seen repeatedly up close & during long action sequences.

And again, I repeat myself when I say Karen’s not dumb or a pushover, she wouldn’t let her head be shaved if she wasn’t 100% behind it. Also, it’s hair! Get over it!

Anyway, besides the outrage over Karen’s missing locks, she elaborated a bit to AMC about her character, saying,

Nebula is the villain of the film. She’s an employee of Thanos and she has a very interesting and complex relationship to the lead female of the film, Gamora.

Hmm, I not too familiar with Guardians, so maybe this is common knowledge, but were they once besties now forced to fight one another? And did you notice she calls herself the villain, not a villain? I hadn’t realized she’d be the main antagonist, but awesome! Are you excited to see Karen in a villainous role? Bald, even!?

Oh! And I retweeted this last night, but of course I’ll share it again. Just goes to show how well Karen’s taking her new look,

Excited to announce that after long negotiations to play Chuckie in new Rugrats film, I have now been offered the role of Tommy Pickles.

Chris Pratt Is Your Peter Quill In ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’

When we last weighed in on Guardians of the Galaxy, we were informing you that they were teetering on the verge of casting overpaid comedians. But they’re back in our good graces for hiring the lead singer of Scarecrow Boat Mouse Rat, Chris Pratt, as Star Lord.

Yes, Andy Dwyer is anchoring a Marvel movie. And this is a good thing. Although it does betray Marvel’s odd predilection for guys named Chris.

It may sound weird that Pratt has landed a major role in a potentially huge franchise. But it’s worth noting that in addition to playing an idiot stoner, he’s been building a very effective drama career, including playing a Navy SEAL convincingly in Zero Dark Thirty and a baseball player fighting feelings of inadequacy in Moneyball. Neither role have any trace of Dwyer: Pratt’s a talented actor.

True, he’s not exactly a mega-watt star, yet, but Marvel has consistently shown impeccable taste in casting: Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans weren’t exactly huge deals either, but they both delivered excellent performances, carried both their own movies and worked together in an ensemble very well.

So, young actors, take note. If you are male, and you’ve got actually a fairly extensive acting resume and the professional experience to go with it, and your name is Chris… Marvel is probably hiring.

Potential Casting Choices For Peter Quill And Drax The Destroyer In ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’

Apparently the following information is a Comic Book Movie exclusive, as they have received the names of some potential actors for the role of Drax The Destroyer in the upcoming Marvel film, Guardians of the Galaxy, with James Gunn in the driver’s seat. This is all thanks to a source that they have that is “very close to production”, who shared with the site the names of three potentials for the role of Drax as well as one person who is “still high on” for the role of Peter Quill.

The potentials that are lined up are former WWE star Dave Bautista, Brian Patrick Wade from Generation Kill and The Old Spice Guy, Isaiah Mustafa. According to the source, they’re all still in negotiations with Marvel at the present time. To be honest, I don’t know if I could take The Old Spice Guy seriously.

For those of you who aren’t fully aware of the backstory behind Drax, he started off as your average human dude named Arthur Douglas whose family was killed by Thanos. Kronos then took Arthur’s soul and put it in a brand new, souped up body so that he could have at it with Thanos. And there we have Drax the Destroyer. The movie will be “updating” this backstory, though, and Hollywood-izing it so that’ll be interesting to see.

There has been a lot of speculation about who will be playing Peter Quill. The source claims that Peter Krasinski is up there in the running, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything is set in stone just yet.

What do you think about these potential casting choices? Who would you like to be on the big screen playing these characters?

Fillion Doubts He’ll Have Time Off from Day Job for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

You have just read that headline and said, “Who gives a bibble?” Well, the bibble is that Nathan Fillion is a regular contributor of Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, starring in Gunn’s Slither and cameoing in his follow-up, Super. So it’s only natural to suspect that Fillion, whose breakthrough roll was in Avengers director Joss Whedon‘s Firefly, might be on the shortlist for a part in Guardians.

Except….

Fillion says he might be too busy with his day job as the lead on ABC’s hit Castle to star in a major film like Guardians. While promoting Whedon’s indie adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing at the Toronto International Film Festival, Fillion offered the following to MTV when they asked about him playing a part in Guardians.

“I’m very busy right now with a job that I’m grateful for. I’ve made a commitment [to 'Castle'] and I have to see it through. And I’m really happy to.”

That’s a shame because Castle is an utterly vanilla police procedural that would have been cancelled in its first season had it not been for Fillion’s chemistry with co-star Stana Katic and all the lonely people that became invested in their coupling.

Still, there is some hope. First of all, Fillion’s name has long been associated with the title roll in Ant Man, so maybe he’s still in the running there. Second, if Guardians is to make its summer of 2014 release date it will probably have to start shooting next summer at the latest, just in time for Fillion to be on hiatus from Castle. And finally, both Guardians and Castle come from the same place: Disney studios, and if there’s anyway they can cross-pollinate their franchises and get the star of one into an other, they’ll find a way to make it happen.

More news as it inevitably will develop.
