‘Game of Thrones’ Writer Bryan Cogman on “Arbitrary” Changes Between Books & TV Show

Game of Thrones writer Byran Cogman was recently interviewed by the ladies of The Mary Sue about his work compiling the incredible Inside HBO’s Game of Thrones book and his involvement in the hit series, which, if you’ve been keeping track, returns in 152 days! They were expressly informed not to talk about Season 3, but that doesn’t stop Cogman from including a little insight to next season in a few of his answers,

TMS: Who’s your favorite character in the show and, if you have a different answer, who’s your favorite character to write? Is there a different favorite from the books?

BC: Very hard to choose – I’ve been living with them for so long, I have great affection for all of them (and the actors who portray them). I had a great time writing Theon in Season 2 and I’ve really enjoyed writing Jaime in Season 3. And I always like writing for the kids. There’s a character I love from the books – Aeron Damphair, who we haven’t seen on the show yet, but it’d be fun to get a crack at him. We’ll see.

Everyone should be looking forward to Jaime and Brienne this season. It’ll be a highlight, of that I’m sure. But what of changes between the original text and the show? Some seem arbitrary, what’s the reasoning behind them?

BC: With all due respect to the fans, there is never a single change on this show that’s “arbitrary”. Every change is debated and discussed at length and there’s always a good reason – be it creative, budgetary, etc. D&D [Benioff & Weiss] make decisions in the adaptation based on what’s best for the show. Of course, I’d love everyone to love every bit of the series, but you can’t please everyone all the time.

I like to believe fans are becoming used to the changes and alterations that come with an adaptation. We’re seeing more and more, just look at The Hobbit or The Walking Dead. Both of those properties have and are making extensive changes from their source material, but they’re generally loved by (most) fans.

I don’t know, have you felt the changes from the books made to Game of Thrones are arbitrary and unnecessary? What are you doing to bide you time until Season 3?

‘Captain America’ Casting Rumors – Jessica Brown Findlay?

Casting for Captain America: The Winter Soldier is in progress as we speak and as a result rumors abound concerning who’s going to be doing what. This time around in the news is a rumor that Jessica Brown Findlay (Downtown Abbey) is in competition to gain the female lead for the flick.

She’s been becoming a Hollywood sweetheart as of late, and this would be just one more project on her steadily growing resume. According to The Daily Express, Findlay is actually the frontrunner in the fight for this coveted role, beating out competitors such as Emelia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four), Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later) and Alison Brie (Mad Men).

Of course, in another couple of days we may hear something completely different, so keep your eyes and ears open for even more casting rumors here at Nerdbastards.

Thanks to BleedingCool for the rumor.

INTERVIEW : Manifest Destiny Cosplay

(Hadrien & Ember )
This past summer, I started what I call long-form interviews. In YouTube world, they always say that a good range is under 10 minutes but I felt that takes away from people’s stories if you limit their time. In these interviews I let the cosplayers go for as long as they want to. Some runs for 20 minutes, other runs for 40 minutes. I figured these interviews will allow people to understand and hear more of their stories.

Manifest Destiny Cosplay I found online somehow. I usually spend many hours just digging around and when they happen to be at Animazement in South Carolina, I shot them an email. We met and talked.

The video of the interview and other photos after the jump.

BATMAN BAT-CAVE DIORAMA Made With 20,000 Lego Bricks!

Check out the pics of this amazing Batman Bat-Cave Diorama made entirely out of Lego Bricks by Wayne Hussey and
Carlyle Livingston.

Their
Batman Lego Bat-Cave was first displayed at Emerald
City ComiCon in late March of 2012. It
then made an appearance at Jet City
Comic Show and then BrickCon 2012.

Some statistics:

They spent 400 hours each, over three
months, building this. The project started in
Early January and finished in late
March.

Also, They estimate they used over 20,000 Lego Toy Brick Pieces ( but it’s
probably much much more, ha! ). It also weighs in at around 100 pounds. Be sure to click all the pics here for larger, more detailed, HD Photos.

NEW BATMAN TOYS – 2012 SQUINKIES Mini-Figures

Ace Bat-Reporter Batmobilly spotted some really excellent totally brand-new Batman Toys at his local retail store the other night. These are tiny little figures called “Squinkies”. There’s a special set of Batman-related ones and they also did the “Justice League”. It looks like there are 12 per package. Batmobilly was cool enough to open a package so we can see what these things look like. Oh man, check it out, there’s the Joker, Two-Face, Catwoman, Penguin, Bane, Riddler, Robin, Nightwing, batgirl, 2 Batman Figures and even a nice Batmobile car!! Yes, these are really cool! I’m gonna have to get the “Batman Set” for sure. ( Thanks Batmobilly )
